The story
Karthigai Deepam is one of the most sacred festivals celebrated at Tiruvannamalai, a holy place deeply associated with Lord Arunachaleswarar. During the Tamil month of Karthigai, the sacred Arunachala Hill becomes the centre of devotion as thousands of devotees gather to witness the lighting of the Mahadeepam atop the hill.
According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of divine fire before Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, revealing His limitless and eternal nature. This divine manifestation is worshipped as Arunachala, the sacred hill of light.
Every year, devotees from different parts of the country travel to Tiruvannamalai to participate in the Karthigai Deepam celebrations. Many undertake the sacred 14 kilometre Girivalam around Arunachala Hill, visiting the Ashta Lingams and offering their prayers to Lord Arunachaleswarar.
Among those who gather during this auspicious occasion are Sadhus, saints and spiritual seekers who dedicate their lives to prayer, meditation and devotion. For these spiritual seekers, receiving a meal during their journey is a meaningful act of care and compassion.
In the Shaiva tradition, serving devotees of Lord Shiva is considered a profound expression of devotion. Maheshwara Puja is a traditional offering in which food is respectfully served to Sadhus and Shiva devotees, recognising the divine presence of Maheshwara in those who dedicate their lives to spiritual pursuits.
The Tamil Shaiva tradition has always placed great importance on serving Shiva devotees. The lives of the 63 Nayanmars stand as beautiful examples of devotion expressed through humility, compassion and selfless service.
Their devotion reminds us that serving those who walk the path of Shiva is itself a sacred form of worship.
Maheshwara Puja is not simply about preparing and serving food. It is an offering made with reverence, where every meal is served with the spirit of devotion and respect.

In Hindu tradition, Annadhanam is regarded as one of the most meaningful forms of charity. Offering food to Sadhus and spiritual seekers holds a special place in Shaiva tradition because it combines the virtue of feeding the hungry with the devotion of serving those who have dedicated their lives to spiritual pursuits.
The act of feeding a Sadhu is traditionally associated with several spiritual blessings.
1. Punya and Divine Blessings
Annadhanam is considered a meritorious act that brings spiritual merit (Punya). Offering food with sincerity and humility is believed to invite divine grace and blessings into one's life.
2. Blessings Through Maheshwara Seva
Shaiva devotional tradition places great importance on serving Shiva devotees. Feeding Sadhus through Maheshwara Puja is considered a sacred expression of devotion to Lord Shiva.
3. Peace and Spiritual Fulfilment
Giving food without expecting anything in return helps cultivate humility, gratitude and inner contentment. It reminds devotees that true devotion is expressed not only through prayers but also through compassionate actions.
4. Family Well Being and Prosperity
Traditional Hindu beliefs associate Annadhanam with blessings for family welfare, abundance and prosperity. Offering food with a pure heart is regarded as an auspicious act that brings goodness into the lives of both the giver and the recipient.
5. Removal of Selfishness Through Seva
Annadhanam teaches the importance of sharing what we have with others. By serving Sadhus and spiritual seekers, devotees practise compassion, generosity and selflessness, qualities that form the foundation of spiritual growth.
6. Continuing the Sacred Path of the Nayanmars
The 63 Nayanmars demonstrated that serving Lord Shiva and His devotees is among the highest expressions of Bhakti. Participating in Maheshwara Puja and Annadhanam allows devotees to carry forward this timeless tradition of Shaiva service.
During Karthigai Deepam, Tiruvannamalai welcomes thousands of pilgrims and spiritual seekers. Sadhus travel from distant places to spend this sacred occasion at the feet of Arunachala, participating in prayers and undertaking Girivalam.
Many spend long hours walking around the holy hill, observing spiritual practices and seeking the blessings of Lord Arunachaleswarar.
Annadhanam provides nourishment to those who have gathered for this sacred occasion. In Hindu tradition, sharing food is regarded as one of the noblest acts of charity because food sustains life and brings comfort to those in need.
The Taittiriya Upanishad (3.10.2) teaches:
अन्नं बहु कुर्वीत।
Annam Bahu Kurvita.
Meaning: Let food be produced in abundance.
The teaching also reminds us to honour food and treat it with reverence.
By participating in Annadhanam, devotees become part of this timeless tradition of sharing food and serving others with compassion.
