The story
According to Hindu tradition, the battle between Lord Murugan and the demon Soorapadman represents the victory of divine righteousness over evil forces.
Long ago, Soorapadman and his powerful forces brought immense suffering to the Devas and disturbed the balance of the universe. Unable to withstand his oppression, the Devas sought refuge in Lord Shiva and prayed for divine protection.
In response to their prayers, Lord Shiva manifested His divine energy, from which Lord Skanda, also revered as Subramanya, Murugan and Kartikeya, emerged. He was destined to restore Dharma and bring an end to the suffering caused by Soorapadman.
Endowed with divine power and accompanied by His celestial army, Lord Murugan prepared for the great battle. Goddess Parvati bestowed upon Him the sacred Vel, a divine spear representing wisdom, courage and the power to destroy ignorance.
The battle between Lord Murugan and Soorapadman culminated at Tiruchendur. After a fierce confrontation, Lord Murugan used His sacred Vel to defeat Soorapadman and his forces.
At the end of the battle, Soorapadman transformed into a peacock and a rooster. Lord Murugan accepted the peacock as His divine vehicle and the rooster as the emblem on His flag.
This transformation represents the profound nature of divine grace. It reminds devotees that the forces of pride, ignorance and negativity can be overcome through surrender to the Divine.
The word Shatru refers to an enemy or opposing force, while Samhara signifies destruction or the removal of such forces.
In Murugan worship, Shatru Samhara represents seeking the divine intervention of Lord Subramanya Swamy to overcome difficulties, opposition, obstacles and negative influences.
The significance of this worship extends beyond external challenges. Hindu spiritual tradition also recognises anger, pride, jealousy, fear, greed and ignorance as inner enemies that prevent a person from experiencing peace and spiritual progress.

His six sacred faces represent His all encompassing divine vision, while His Vel symbolises the wisdom that removes darkness and ignorance.
The six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, known as Arupadai Veedu, are deeply connected with His divine life and victories. Among them, Tiruchendur holds special significance as the sacred place associated with His victory over Soorapadman.
Devotees continue to worship Lord Murugan with prayers, Kavadi, Abhishekam, Archana and Homam, seeking His grace during important moments of their lives.
